Minutes Members received some advanced slides and a presentation which provided an update on Police Visibility and Engagement, Crime in Rural Areas and Serious and Organised Crime (item 7 in the Minute Book).

In response to questions, the Panel heard:

Police Visibility and Engagement

· The Police and Crime Commissioner was happy to look into specific issues with Operation Ford and police presence at meetings and it was accepted that more joined-up working and communication was needed.

· The contact details of Local Bobbies would be monitored more closely through scrutiny to ensured they were always up to date. The PCC was pleased to hear of the scheme working well in some areas such as Thornhill.

· Exit interviews were being encouraged to help with retention.

· There had always been a graduate entry route for joining Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, and this continued.

· Whilst the footfall at some local stations was small, the person available was also processing online crime reports and able to perform other duties whilst being available to assist anyone if required.

Rural Crime

· Hampshire and IOW was now one of the best in the country for response times.

· £40-£50k of damage had been caused through hare-coursing over the previous few years and remained a priority under the rural crime section of the plan.

Serious and Organised Crime

· The National Crime Agency was looking at cash-only establishments as well as the drug supply network and a regional unit was developing to assist on a more local level. Hampshire Constabulary would always find the best method of investigation following on from reports received.

· Funding and capacity remained an issue with the Criminal Justice System and Probation area with serious investment required in rehabilitation.

· The PCC continued to lobby government to make the modification of vehicles an enforceable offence.
