Address to the Council by the new Mayor
The new Mayor will announce their multi denominational team and charity arrangements and address the Council.
Minutes
The Mayor outlined her priorities for the year, confirming that chaplaincy arrangements would include a rotation of speakers from a range of faiths and none, promoting inclusivity and community cohesion.
She expressed her honour at serving as Mayor and highlighted her commitment to building a kinder, healthier, and more connected community for everyone in the borough. Drawing on her personal background in Basingstoke, she reflected on how her early life experiences shaped her values of resilience, inclusion, and compassion.
The Mayor identified wellbeing as the central theme of her mayoral year, with particular focus on reducing loneliness, supporting mental and physical health, and strengthening community connections. She noted that while general health outcomes in the borough are strong, mental health outcomes fall below the national average, making this a key area of concern.
To support these priorities, she advised that she would be raising funds through the establishment of a Mayoral Community Chest, working in partnership with Basingstoke Voluntary Action in support of local charities. She also referenced her personal experience as a carer and her ongoing support for people with learning disabilities.
In relation to her civic duties, the Mayor emphasised the importance of respectful and constructive debate in Council meetings and confirmed her intention to act apolitically, supporting all councillors in their community work.
The Mayor concluded by thanking her family, council staff, volunteers, and residents for their continued support. She confirmed her commitment to working collaboratively, listening to the community, and prioritising wellbeing throughout her year in office.
The Mayor emphasised her intention for the year ahead to be guided by the principles of kindness, connection and well-being with a focus on ensuring everyone feels included and supported.
